My Tho, Mekong Delta

After showing Kathleen and Shane around Saigon for two days, we headed south to spend a few days in the Mekong Delta.  Our first stop was My Tho, which is a popular destination for day trips to the Mekong Delta since it is close to Saigon.  Our driver took us to a tour company that offered almost the same exact program that Yen and I did when we went to the Mekong Delta in September.  Vietnam has numerous tour companies and it seems that that all copy each other and this was no exception.  Luckily, Yen negotiated with the tour company and we were able to deviate from the typical tour program.  In addition to the normal tour of rowing down the waterways, visiting a coconut candy operation, and drinking tea while local singers and musicians performed for us, the tour guide took us to see a floating fish farm on the river where we met the caretaker and got a chance to feed the fish.

P.S. At the same time as this posting, I am releasing a new design for this website. The main change is to the blog page, which now includes links to recent blog postings and previous months.  You can also now subscribe to the blog and be notified via email whenever I update it. I hope you will find these improvements useful.

On the way to My Tho, we saw these dogs on a motorbike.  Kathleen thought it was cute, but our driver told us that these dogs were on their way to a restaurant.

Jade Emperor Pagoda, Saigon

During the Thanksgiving break, our friends Shane and Kathleen came from the States to visit us for a week.  We spent the first two days showing them around Saigon and bringing them to some of our favorite restaurants.  One of the highlights was going to the Jade Emperor Pagoda, which offered some nice photographic scenes with interesting lighting and incense smoke filled rooms.  Shane and Kathleen also wanted to get some clothes custom tailored so we went fabric shopping and then brought the fabric to a local tailor to get our clothes made.  Before coming to Vietnam, I ordered a new camera (Olympus O-MD E-M1) on-line for Shane to bring over for me, so I had a chance to put it through its paces with some street photography before we headed south to the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island for the rest of the week.

The Jade Emperor Pagoda is also known as the Tortoise Pagoda because of the pond full of turtles that sits next to it.
