On our last full day in Shanghai, we visited a building called 1933 Old Millfun, which at one time was the largest slaughter house in East Asia. The building was recently renovated and now houses several shops, restaurants, and art studios. 1933 Old Milfun has some fascinating architecture with staircases and ramps (which used to be used to march cows to slaughter) twisting in different directions.
After two days of travel, we finally made it to Tokyo last night. Our original itinerary was to fly from Beijing to Tokyo with a layover in Shanghai. Since we were already in Shanghai, we asked our airline (China Eastern Airlines) if we could just take the flight from Shanghai to Tokyo. They unfortunately said no, so we had to take the high speed train to Beijing to catch the flight. The next day, we took the flight from Beijing back to Shanghai, where we learned that our flight to Tokyo was cancelled because of the typhoon in Japan. The airline then sent us on a bus to a hotel somewhere in Shanghai without communicating to us information or when they would contact us again. We were totally confused. Luckily there were two bus loads of China Eastern Airlines refugees at the hotel, and we made friends with several other travelers and pieced together the plan the airline had for us and we all made it to Japan the next day.
